FULTON, Mo. — The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater scored three unanswered goals against Westminster (MO) to pull off the victory over the Blue Jays for their third win in four days.
UW-Whitewater pushed forward from the get-go, with early shots on goal from both
Alex Gotz (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) and
Aidan Glancey (Milwaukee, Wis./Whitnall). However, it was Westminster that took the first lead of the game, scoring on a counter-attack in the 20th minute.
After trailing for a few minutes, the Warhawks found the equalizer from
Franklin Kunfera (West Bend, Wis./West Bend West) in the 37th minute. The Blue Jay keeper wasn't able to collect an initial shot from
Matthew Hoover (Urbandale, Iowa/Dowling Catholic). Kunfera was in the perfect spot to tap the ball in for the equalizer.
Immediately after the break, both teams put on two quick shots on goal.
Cooper Re (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) had a strong attempt for the Warhawks in the 49th minute, with
Mason Diercks (Oregon, Wis./Oregon) taking one in the 63rd.
The Warhawks were able to break the stalemate on what's become an efficient way of scoring for UWW. Similar to the two goals against Greenville a game ago,
Alex Nelson (Waunakee, Wis./Waunakee) sent a long throw-in towards the net.
Luka Breslin (Dublin, Ireland/Terenure College) headed it over to
Hayden Saul (Iowa City, Iowa/Liberty), who scored the second Warhawk goal to take the lead.
With a one-goal lead and time starting to wind down, the Warhawks keeper
Austin Waite (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) punted the ball over the midfielders.
Cooper Re (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) was able to get underneath it and head it over to
Alex Gotz (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper). Gotz finished off the break with the bracer goal.
Waite finished the second half with three saves to maintain the advantage and give the Warhawks a 3-0 record after their opening road games.
The Warhawks return to the pitch next Saturday, September 13th, for their home opener against Augsburg. Kick-off is set for 1 PM at Fiskum Field.
