The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer played Marian University to a 1-1 draw on Saturday at Robert W. Fiskum Field, with both teams finding the net in the second half.
Aria Patel (Naperville, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) grabbed the goal for the Warhawks, but the Sabres were able to quickly equalize. Despite a strong offensive push at the end of the game for the Warhawks, the game ended in the 1-1 stalemate.
The first half kicked off with a steady attack on offense from the Warhawks. Mackenzie Toms notched the first shot on goal for UWW, with a well placed attempt in the 15th minute. The Warhawks kept up the pressure, outshooting the visiting Sabres 7-3, but were unable to break the score open.
The second half began with UWW taking the early initiative, as
Aria Patel (Naperville, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) scored in the 51st minute to give the home team a 1-0 lead. Patel collected her own rebound off a shot and quickly put it past the keeper.
Marian responded soon after with a solo goal by Sophia Romo in the 59th minute, leveling the score at 1-1.
The Warhawks were just inches away from reclaiming the lead, with a shot from
Summer Curtis (Cary, Ill./Cary Grove) hitting the top woodwork and bouncing straight down. Curtis wasn't able to get the friendly roll, as Marian cleared the attempt away.
With 15 minutes to go, Marian hunkered back and played keep away. After a few minutes of the defenders passing it back and forth, the Warhawks made a formation change to put some pressure on the patient play.
The change worked, with the Warhawks causing Marian to turn it over in dangerous areas close to the net. The Warhawks put two shots on net and had three corner opportunities in the final few minutes, but the Sabres were able to hold off the attack.
Defenisvely, the Warhawks had another strong showing.
Hannah Wolf (Oshkosh, Wis./West) played the first 45 minutes, making one save.
Jude Dobrinska (Milwaukee, Wis./Ronald Reagan College Prep) closed the game, making three saves. The defenders also didn't allow a single corner kick from the Sabres.
The Warhawks will head out on the road, taking on Carroll on Monday, September 8th. The women's team only gets one day of rest before returning back to Fiskum Field on September 10th for a 7 PM match against Carthage.
