Women's Soccer Answers Luther Quickly, Match Ends in 1-1 Stalemate

Luther scored in the 54th minute, but Summer Curtis Equalized in the 58th

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team played Luther College to a 1-1 draw Wednesday evening in Decorah, Iowa. After an early second-half goal by the Norse, Summer Curtis (Cary, Ill./Cary Grove) connected on the equalizer for the Warhawks in the 58th minute.

The first half was a defensive standoff between both teams, with each team only recording one shot on goal in the first 45. Anna Gunderson (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) had the on-target kick for UW-Whitewater in the 22nd minute. Luther had their attempt soon after in the 24th minute, but Hannah Wolf (Oshkosh, Wis./West) made the stop to maintain a scoreless first half

The second half shifted to an offensive battle. Less than a minute into the half, Karina Osborn (Arena, Wis./River Valley) had a good look on goal, but the shot was blocked by a defender. Despite the block, the offensive pressure set an early tone for the second half.

Luther was able to turn the Warhawks' attack around to break the stalemate in the 54th minute. The Norse lead didn't last long, as Summer Curtis (Cary, Ill./Cary Grove) equalized in the 58th minute. Two fouls from Luther in the offensive zone set up a free kick about 30 yards out. Rachel Cvikel (Franklin, Wis./Saint Thomas More) gave a quick touch pass to Curtis, who put the ball in the top right corner over the heads of the Norse defense.

The Warhawks kept up the pressure, playing for the win. UWW put three shots on goal in the final 20 minutes. Rowan Severson (Mount Horeb, Wis./Mount Horeb) had two attempts, but both were thwarted by the Norse keeper. After 90 minutes, the game remained tied at 1-1 with neither team able to find the game-winner.

Next up for the women's soccer team, the Warhawks return to Fiskum Field for a home match against Marian. Kick-off is set for 6 PM for the team's Youth Day. The game is a part of the first annual Purple Wave week for UWW Athletics.
