Warhawks Claim Warhawk-Knight Cup for First Time

In the 5th annual Warkhawk-Knight cup, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks came out victorious with a 1-0 win over the Wartburg College Knights.

Despite a high energy rivalry, both teams struggled to gain traction in the first half. Between the two teams, the half only consisted of 2 total shots on goal, one by each team. Both shots on goal came within the last 2 minutes of the first half.

Although both teams seemed able to get the ball down the field, defensive efforts prevailed and limited the ability to shoot. Wartburg's defense held Whitewater's field players to 0 shots on goal. Whitewater's only shot on goal came by Goal Keeper Thiago Vieira (Prairie Du Sac, Wis./Sauk Prairie) in the waning seconds of the first half. Wartburg's first half top shooter came by way of Midfielder Kaleab Wendy, who recorded 2 shots in only 27 minutes.

At the start of the second half, Wartburg came out strong, recording 3 shots on goal within the first 10 minutes. On the other side of the ball, Whitewater continued to be unable to shoot accurately. Despite this, Whitewater was awarded a chance to score early in the second half, but the goal was negated by a foul.

Wartburg continued to add to their shots on goal, Midfielder Flori Gembo contributing 4 in the half. However, they were never able to find the back of the net. The Warhawks took advantage of this and grabbed the lead in the 82nd minute thanks to a Hayden Saul (Iowa City, Iowa/Liberty) goal. After an Adam Kaup (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln) corner kick was deflected, Saul was able to have a free shot at the net. The score was Whitewater's only shot on goal of the second half.

With the win, Whitewater moves to 5-2 on the season, defeating Wartburg for the first time since 2019 and claiming the cup for the first time since its introduction in 2020.

The Warhawks will travel to Dubuque next to face Loras College on October 1st, where they look to maintain possession of another cup: the Hawk Cup.
