Warhawks Battle to Tie with Vikings

Appleton, Wis. -- The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team battled to a 1-1 at Lawrence University at the Banta Bowl Wednesday night.

The Warhawks had a plethora of scoring opportunities in the first half with nine shots including five on goal. In the 37th minute, UWW finally broke through scoring on a set piece. Earning a corner, the Warhawks sent the ball in to the middle of the box finding Karina Osborn (Arena, Wis./River Valley) for a header. The ball caromed off the crossbar and back into the box where Summer Curtis (Cary, Ill./Cary Grove) redirected the rebound back toward goal beating the keeper to put UWW up 1-0. The goal is Curtis' third of the season.

Early in the second half, Lawrence was awarded a free kick near the corner. The cross skimmed off of a player in front of the box and ended up hitting the arm of a Warhawk defender as the referee stopped play signaling the hand ball and awarding the Vikings a penalty kick. The Lawrence player had a quick approach, just a single step, before send a hard shot to the top left corner of the goal. Jude Dobrinska (Milwaukee, Wis./Ronald Reagan College Prep) read the attempt correctly, laying out to try and get a hand on the shot, but was unable to reach the well-placed kick as Lawrence tallied the equalizer in the 58th minute.

The final 30 minutes was a flurry of action with both teams putting together great scoring opportunities. A miscommunication led to a one-on-one for the Warhawks, but the shot went wide. For Lawrence, Dobrinska thwarted their one-on-one opportunity with a fantastic save.

In the second half, the squads combined for 11 shots including 6 on goal. Dobrinska turned away four scoring chances in the second half and five in the contest.

The now 3-2-3 Warhawks will host Cornell College on Saturday. UW-Whitewater will recognize their senior class during the contest that is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
