The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team fell to Grinnell College in a close, defensive match. Both teams only put two shots on goal, but the Pioneers were able to find the lone goal of the day on a set piece in the early minutes of the game.
Grinnell grabbed the lead early, putting the first corner kick opportunity they had into the back of the net. The Warhawks looked to grab their own, but the Pioneer defense held them off, not allowing a clean shot on goal in the first half.
After the halftime break, Grinnell had another look at goal, but
Hannah Wolf (Oshkosh, Wis./West) made the save to keep the Warhawks within one. Â
Ten minutes into the half, an injury on the field caused the game to be paused so the Grinnell player could be safely attended to. The Warhawks were able to resume play with a corner kick opportunity.
Emily Taylor (Fond du Lac, Wis./St. Mary's Springs) took the first shot on goal on the set piece, but the Pioneer keeper made the save to keep the lead for Grinnell.
Shortly after,
Ellyse Kelley (Green Bay, Wis./Denmark) put another shot towards the net, but it didn't make its way past the keeper. Grinnell held on for the rest of the half, not allowing another shot on goal from the Warhawks. The Warhawks had a few opportunities late, taking three shots in the final five minutes, but none were on target.
The women's soccer team will wrap up its road stretch with a game at Lawrence on Wednesday, September 17th. The Warhawks will then return home on Saturday, September 20th, to take on Cornell for their Senior Day.
