Newport News, Va. - The No. 2 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater volleyball team opened day two of the Captain Classic with a 3-1 (25-17, 25-14, 26-28, 25-15) win over Coast Guard Academy Saturday. In the final match of the tournament, UWW topped Catholic University 3-1 (25-10, 25-22, 21-25, 25-21).
The offense was rolling hammering down 56 kills in the match while the defense held Coast Guard to an attack percentage of just .086.Â
Three Warhawks registered double digit kills in the contest led by 13 from
Abbie Dix (Brodhead, Wis./Brodhead). Amanda Hillman and
Gaby DiMotto (New Berlin, Wis./West) added 10 each.
Chloe Werner (Waterford, Wis./Waterford Union) was efficient from the right side with 7 kills in 14 attempts without a single attack error. Dix paced UWW defensively at the net with four blocks including three solos.Â
In the backcourt,
Kyanne Wusterbarth (Oconto, Wis./Oconto) tallied 17 digs while
Emma Bludgen (Aurora, Ill./Metea Valley) added 15 and
Natalie Lawton (Elmhurst, Ill./IC Catholic Prep) had 13. Wusterbarth and Bludgen combined for five aces from the service line.Â
Aubrie Krzus (Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South) had 45 assists in the match adding six kills.Â
The Warhawk offense was cruising in the first two sets of the Catholic match. UWW hit .333 and .429 respectively to take a 2-0 lead in the contest.Â
DiMotto bolstered the offense with 13 kills in the match. Dix joined her in double figures with 10 kills and added four blocks including three more solos.Â
Krzus dished out 28 assists while DiMotto and Bludgen each tallied four aces. Lawton and Bludgen registered double digit digs with 13 and 11 respectively to lead the defense.Â
Three Warhawks were represented on the Captains Classic All-Tournament Team including
Abbie Dix (Brodhead, Wis./Brodhead),
Natalie Lawton (Elmhurst, Ill./IC Catholic Prep) and the tournament MVP
Aubrie Krzus (Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South).
UW-Whitewater will return to Wisconsin to host their first invitational of the season Friday-Saturday, September 5-6. The Warhawks will host Berry, Concordia Wisconsin, Elmhurst and Pacific Lutheran for the invite that will feature matches in Russell Arena and Kachel Fieldhouse.Â
