Warhawks Stumble in Opening Round of WIAC Tournament

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team fell in the opening round game of the WIAC Tournament to UW-Platteville. The Warhawks had a slow start offensively, allowing the Pioneers to slowly gather runs to take the 6-3 win.

UW-Platteville recorded three hits in a row to put the first run on the board. The Warhawks grabbed two base runners in the bottom of the first, but that would be it, as the Pioneers kept the Warhawks off the base path for most of the early game.

UW-Platteville put up 4 runs by the sixth inning, but the Warhawks kept any crooked numbers off the board getting out of innings before the Pioneers could string together extra damage.

The Warhawks finally broke through in the 6th, starting a rally that ended with three runs, closing the game to just one run. Andy Thies (Tallahassee, Fla./Lawton Chiles) tallied an RBI single to add the first run, followed by a HBP RBI and a balk for the three runs.

The Pioneers added an insurance run in the eighth and ninth, reclaiming a three run lead heading into the last three outs. The Warhawks led off the last frame with two consecutive hits, but a double play squandered a comeback shot as the Pioneers came away with the win.

The Warhawks will face the losing team between UW-Oshkosh & UW-La Crosse with a chance to reach the bounce back game tomorrow evening. The first game is scheduled for 10 AM with the bounce back at 4 PM.
