UWW Overcomes UWL, 6-5, to keep WIAC Tournament Alive

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team kept their WIAC Tournament alive with a 6-5 win over UW-La Crosse on Friday morning. The Warhawks (36-5, 24-4 WIAC) will face the loser of UW-Oshkosh and UW-Platteville at 4 PM later today.

The Eagles started out hot, with three consecutive singles followed by a double to score two quick runs to open the game. However, the Warhawks got rolling right away. Aaron Holland (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) led off the game with a single, as Matt Scolan (Downers Grove, Ill./South) scored him with a double. Scolan score himself on a sacrifice fly from Eli Frank (Bayport, Wis./Bay Port) to tie the game up at 2-a-piece.

Adam Cootway (DePere, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) and Andy Thies (Tallahassee, Fla./Lawton Chiles) hit back-to-back homers, giving the Warhawks a 4-2 lead with only a single out in the bottom of the first. Danny Hopper (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) singles following the homers, causing UW-La Crosse to make a early substitution on the mound.

The Eagles got out of the first with just the two run deficit, and quieted the Warhawk offense with three scoreless innings until their offense got back to work.

Mac Born for UW-La Crosse reclaimed the lead for the Eagles with a three-run lead in the top of the 5th. The lead held for just an inning, as Matt Scolan (Downers Grove, Ill./South) put the Warhawks back on top with a two-run homer to left center.

Logan Eisenbarth (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) protected the one run lead, only allowing one hit in the final three innings. Eisenbarth earned the win for his effort with four strikeouts in his 4.1 innings of work.

The Warhawks will match-up against either UW-Oshkosh or UW-Platteville with a trip the WIAC Championship game on the line. The game is scheduled for 4 PM.
