The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team used a huge 6th inning rally to gather a run rule win over LeTourneau University.
LeTourneau threatened to score early, loading the bases up with the first three batters. But the Warhawks got out of the inning unscathed with
Max Huseboe (Ripon, Wis./Ripon) tossing three straight Ks to retire the side.
The YellowJackets would be the ones to find the first run though, with a RBI double in the top of the third. The Warhawks answered back right away, with
Aaron Holland (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) sending in Daryl Jackson to even the score.
The Warhawks continued to stack on runs, using aggressive base running rather than their normal hard hitting. After five innings, the Warhawks led 4-1 with only two hits.
Ben Lee (Amherst, Wis./Amherst) came into relive Huseboe and was three-up-three-down in his first inning. The Warhawks carried the momentum right into the bottom of the inning, going on a 6-run rally to put some distance between them and LeTourneau.
On the very first pitch of the frame,
Adam Cootway (DePere, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) sent one to deep left center, taking a solo home run. UWW loaded up the bases to score a few more, capped off by
Eli Frank's (Bayport, Wis./Bay Port) base-clearing double.
Cootway had another chance at-bat in the inning and nearly sent one over the wall again, but the centerfielder for the YellowJackets made the catch at the warning track.
Down by nine, the YellowJackets started looking to move the runners, but it backfired on them. Catcher
Aaron Holland (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) retired the side with 2-4 caught stealing.
In the bottom of the 7th, the Warhawks had the bases loaded again.
Dominik McVay (Mineral Point, Wis./Mineral Point) ended the game with an RBI single to enforce the 10-run rule.
Huseboe picked up the win on the mound, going 5.0 innings with 8 strikeouts. Lee recorded his second save of the season, pitching the last two innings of the game.
UWW Baseball will wrap up their trip to Pensacola, Florida with three reserve games and a special scrimmage against John Melvin Christian College. The Warhawks next official contest will be back home at Prucha Field, facing St. Mary's (MN) on Wednesday, March 26th.
