The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team defeated St. Mary's University in their 2025 home opener. The Warhawks rallied in the 7th to push ahead and kept the Cardinals off the scoreboard until the end.
The Warhawks took down the side in order for the first two innings, setting them up for some great offense in the bottom of the second. The Warhawks kept getting guys on bases through their hitting, defensive errors, and drawing hit by pitches.Â
Aaron Holland (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) added a two-RBI single to highlight the Warhawks four-run frame.
Saint Mary's managed their first hit with a one-out single up the middle, but the Warhawk defense left him stranded with two quick flyouts in the third.
The Warhawks added another two runs with an
Adam Cootway (DePere, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) double in the bottom of the fourth. Cootway added another RBI in the bottom of the 6th to put the Warhawks up 7-0.
After the 7th inning stretch, the Warhawks put together another rally, scoring four runs in the frame. Daryl Jackson kept the inning alive with a two out double, and the Warhawks, recording three hits in a row with two outs to go up 11-0.
Hudson Turner (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) capped off the night with a two-run homer in the bottom of the 8th. The Cardinals tried to rally in the 9th, but stranded three runners on as the Warhawks took care of business in the home opener.
Jackson Koenig (Blaine, Minn./Blaine) picked up the win with the first five innings. Koenig had four strikeouts with only one hit allowed.
The Warhawks open their conference season tomorrow with a home series against UW-Eau Claire. The two doubleheaders (originally scheduled for Saturday/Sunday) were moved up the Thursday/Friday due to the forecast.Â
