The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team used a huge 6th inning to propel them past Edgewood College, 9-7 to improve to 7-0 on the year and 4-0 at the Studer's Blue Wahoo Challenge. The Warhawks (7-0), scored 6 runs in the top of the 6th on the Eagles (2-7).
The Eagles didn't waste any time getting a run up on the Warhawks. Edgewood scored in the bottom of the first on an RBI single.
The Warhawks answered back in the second & third innings, tallying a run in each frame.
Andy Thies (Tallahassee, Fla./Lawton Chiles) nocked a sacrifice fly in the second, with
Eli Frank (Bayport, Wis./Bay Port) taking an RBI-double in the third.
Edgewood retook the lead in the bottom of the 4th, using the momentum of a three-up-three-down in the top of the inning. The Eagles had a 2-RBI double, but the Warhawks got out of the inning without any more damage.
The Warhawks knotted it back in the fifth, with Daryl Jackson scoring with the benefit of an overthrown pickoff attempt.
George Hansen (Superior, Wis./Superior) came in for relief & knocked down the Eagle batters in order in the bottom of the 5th.
The Warhawks carried that momentum into their offense, scoring 6 runs in the top of the 6th. Five of the six runs came with two outs in the inning, as the Warhawks went up 9-3.
During that Warhawk rally,
Matt Scolan (Downers Grove, Ill./South) crossed the plate for his 196th career run, breaking the previous Warhawk career runs record set by Jeff Donovan (2006-08, 10-11).
The Eagles started to close in on the lead, scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the inning. Edgewood added another one in the 7th, cutting the lead to just two runs.
Max Huseboe (Ripon, Wis./Ripon) came into close the game out for the Warhawks. Huseboe tallied 3 Ks during his two innings, picking up the save.
The Warhawks have their first day off since coming down to Pensacola, but will be back in action on Sunday, taking on LeTourneau (TX) University at 4:30 PM.
