Quick Start Propels UWW Baseball over Sewanee

Warhawks defeat UoS, 10-2

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team started off hot to get up big against Sewanee, The University of the South. The Warhawks (6-0) carried the momentum forward, defeating the Tigers (11-7) on Thursday, 10-2.

The Warhawks didn't waste any time, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first. Adam Cootway (DePere, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) put an RBI single through the right side, scoring one run. The Warhawks aggressive base-running cause some confusion on the defensive end, as Danny Hopper (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) also scored on the play.

Sewanee led off the second inning with a single, but Cade Hansen (New Braunfels, Texas/Smithson Valley) notched three Ks in a row to retire the side. UW-Whitewater carried the momentum into the bottom of the game, tallying on three runs. Sam Paden (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) and Daryl Jackson each had lead-off doubles to kick start the rally.

The middle of the game went by quick, as both teams pitching & defense took center stage. The Tigers broke the stall with a single in the top of the 6th. That hit started a rally, scoring Sewanee's first run with an RBI single.

The Warhawks answered back in a big way in the 7th. After three straight Ks from George Hansen (Superior, Wis./Superior) in relief, the Warhawks blasted 5 runs to go up 10-1.

Matt Scolan (Downers Grove, Ill./South) placed an 2-RBI triple right over the right fielders head, and then scored himself after a pitching balk. With that run for Scolan, he tied the Warhawks' run record with 195 runs over his career.

Adam Cootway (DePere, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) followed Scolan up with a 2-RBI home run, capping off a strong batting inning.

Sewanee added another run in the top of the ninth, but the Warhawks came away with the 10-2 win over the University of the South.
