The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team put together a late rally, flipping the upset attempt by Carroll University. The Warhawks (5-0) scored 8 runs in the seventh & eight innings to win 10-6 over the Pioneers (7-4).
The Warhawks opened the game with a lead off single from
Aaron Holland (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North), but he was stranded with the Pioneers defense closing it off. Carroll saw their first base-runner stranded as well after
Logan Eisenbarth (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) started the game off hot, with three strikeouts in the second frame.
The Warhawks opened up the scoring with a 2-RBI single from
Alex Najera (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) in the bottom of the second. Carroll answered back with their own two runs in the third, sneaking in two runners from a wild pitch.
Both teams were quiet offensively until Carroll broke the tie in the fifth with an RBI single. After a three-up-three-down in the bottom of the frame, the Pioneers carried the momentum into a four-run 6th inning to go up 6-2.
Carroll's defense stepped up to keep the Warhawks heavy hitting at bay, but the Warhawks broke one open with loaded bases in the bottom of the seventh.
Adam Cootway (DePere, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) hit a single to send one in. The Pioneers looked towards a reliever to get them out of the jam, but a balk sent in another score followed by a sacrifice fly by
Andy Thies (Tallahassee, Fla./Lawton Chiles) to make it a one-run game.
Carroll looked like they were posed to get some insurance runs in the 8th.
Ben Lee (Amherst, Wis./Amherst) was faced with bases loaded, but recorded a K and ground out to escape the inning without any runs.
The Warhawks carried the momentum straight into the bottom of the frame. Daryl Jackson led things off, reaching first after a HBP. Carroll got the next two batters out, but
Matt Scolan (Downers Grove, Ill./South) kicked off another rally with a single.
Eli Frank (Bayport, Wis./Bay Port) followed it up with a 2-RBI double to give the Warhawks the lead at 7-6.
The Warhawks added 3 more runs on RBI singles, turning the game around to a 10-6 advantage.
Max Huseboe (Ripon, Wis./Ripon) closed the four-run lead with 2 ground outs & a fly-out.
UWW baseball heads into their 3rd game of Studer's Blue Wahoo Challenge tomorrow morning at 10 am. The Warhawks take on Sewanee, the College of the South.
