Warhawk Women Fall to Falcons in WIAC Opener

Whitewater, Wis. -- The UW-Whitewater women's soccer team fell to UW-River Falls 2-1 in the Warhawks' first game of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference slate.

The Falcons struck in the first five minutes with a long shot that sailed over the keepers outstretched hand and into the top left of the goal.

The Warhawks registered the equalizer in the 41st minute after a failed clearance was settled and pushed forward by Genevieve Simkowski (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest). At the top of the box she found Brooklynn Carlson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake Central) on her left. A nifty first touch had Carlson by one defender for a one-on-one with the keeper. As the goalie stepped out, she slid the ball passed the sliding keeper with her left foot for her third goal of the season.

The Falcons got behind the defensive line in the 51st minute with UWRF striking on a drive from the top of the box for the 2-1 lead. That score held the rest of the way.

UW-Whitewater had six shots, three on goal, while the Falcons recorded nine shots with six on frame. Corner kicks were even 5-5 in the game.

Kara Smith (Joliet, Ill./Plainfield South) went the distance in goal making three saves in the contest.
