Warhawk Claim Share of WIAC Title with Comeback Win over UW-Platteville

Luka Breslin's game-winner in the 82nd minute gives UWW first title since WIAC play resumed in 2024

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team claimed a share of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Regular Season Title with a comeback 2-1 victory of UW-Platteville on Friday night.

The title marks the fourth in program history, but first since WIAC Men's Soccer was resumed in 2024 (3 titles from 2009-11). The 2025 title is the first under Head Coach Tony Guinn. With the win, the Warhawks also reclaimed the Shaymus Guinn Cup after falling to the Pioneers the last two years.

The Warhawks had an uphill battle in the first half, with the Pioneers striking first on their first shot on goal. A few first half yellows put the Warhawks on their heels, fighting to stay in control of the game.

UW-Whitewater didn't allow another goal to cross the line, with Austin Waite (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) making two saves to keep the margin at just one.

After a quick reset at halftime, the Warhawks were ready to keep fighting. The third corner kick of the half ended up being the charm. Tyler Chrisman (Lemont, Ill./Lemont Township) connected with Hayden Saul (Iowa City, Iowa/Liberty) off the corner, with Saul heading it over to Cooper Re (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) for his 14th goal of the season to tie up the game.

Now it was the Pioneers who were on their heels, fending off the effective Warhawk offense. UW-Whitewater broke through for the game-winner, with Luka Breslin (Dublin, Ireland/Terenure College) making the diving header off a cross from James Kiraly (Twin Lakes, Wis./Wilmot Union)

Breslin's goal in the 82nd minute left little time for the Pioneers to equalize. The Warhawk defense held them back, securing a share of the 2024 WIAC Regular Season Title.

UW-Whitewater secured the two-seed in the WIAC Tournament and will face the highest-seed remaining after the first round games. The semifinal match will be on November 6th at 7 PM on Fiskum Field.
