The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team defeated UW-Stout 3-1 behind two goals from
Summer Curtis (Cary, Ill./Cary Grove). The Warhawks third straight win puts them tied for second place in the conference with one game remaining in WIAC play.
The Warhawks opened the game with a quick goal from
Summer Curtis (Cary, Ill./Cary Grove).
Anna Gunderson (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) lined a corner kick over to
Berkley Dylla (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton-Warrenville South). Dylla headed it over to Curtis for the goal in the 8th minute to put the Warhawks up early in the half.
Stout started to get it's footing, holding off any additional attacks from UW-Whitewater, but the Blue Devils were held off by the Warhawk defense. In the first half, Stout managed just three shots, one on goal, and no corners.
With time winding down in the half,
Jenna Laidlaw (Aberdeen, Scotland/Aberdeen Grammar) drew a foul in the goalie box to earn a penalty kick. The sophomore converted to put the Warhawks up 2-0 before the break.
Out of halftime, the Warhawks went back on the attack, but Stout slowed down the Warhawks, only allowing two corners in the last 45-minutes, compared to six in the first half.
UW-Whitewater found a key opportunity from
Abby LaMere (Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame), with a long through pass up to
Summer Curtis (Cary, Ill./Cary Grove). Curtis only needed to beat the goalie to put the Warhawks up 3-0.
Stout was able to avoid the shut-out with a well-placed free kick from 25-yards out. With just 8-minutes remaining, the Blue Devils were unable to find another goal to threaten the Warhawks.
Since the Warhawks' match on October 28th against Monmouth was canceled, UW-Whitewater will return to action in a week from now against UW-La Crosse. Kick-off against the top-ranked Eagles is set for 5 pm on November 1st.
