Curtis Collects Equalizer in Waning Seconds

Warhawk draw with UWSP 2-2

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team battled to a 2-2 draw with conference-opponent UW-Stevens Point on Saturday's WIAC battle. The Warhawks struck late, with Summer Curtis (Cary, Ill./Cary Grove) heading the ball in with 14 seconds on the clock to force the draw.

The first half was all offense. The Pointers struck first, connecting on their first shot of the game to go up 1-0 only 7 minutes in. The Warhawk eventually found their own shot on goal, which also went through for the equalizer in the 11th minute.

Both teams tightened up defensively after the first two shots of the game ended up as goals. The Warhawks were unable to get another shot on target for the rest of the half. UWSP managed to get two on goal, but both were saved by Hannah Wolf (Oshkosh, Wis./West).

After the break, UWSP capitalize on a break-away, drawing a foul inside the box to get a penalty kick. Point's forward made the Warhawks pay, taking a 2-1 lead with the PK.

The Warhawks wouldn't go quietly though, slowly chipping away at the Pointers defense. Summer Curtis (Cary, Ill./Cary Grove) and Kalee Fricke (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) put back to back shots on net, but the Pointer keeper and then defender made the saves. Genevieve Simkowski (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) put her own shot on in the 87th minute, threatening to get an equalizer late.

UWW broke through with just seconds on the clock. The UWSP keeper was unable to collect a chip shot from Abby LaMere (Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame). Summer Curtis (Cary, Ill./Cary Grove) was in perfect position to head it in for the goal, tying the game with just 14 ticks remaining.

The Pointers took one more heave at net, but the time expired and UW-Whitewater collected the draw on the sheet.

The Warhawk women's soccer team will take a week off before heading up to UW-Eau Claire next Saturday. The WIAC contest is set to begin at 2:00 PM on October 18th.
