Warhawks Battle to Four-Set Win over HSU

Whitewater, Wis. -- The No. 4 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater volleyball team fought hard to take down Hardin-Simmons 3-1 (28-26, 25-22, 23-25, 25-20) in their first match of the third UWW Invitational of the season.

In the opener, the Warhawks put together a comeback of epic proportions and staved off five HSU set points before capturing the win. UWW trailed by as much as seven, 20-13, before mounting a huge comeback. The Warhawks went on a 9-2 run to pull within one, 22-21. The Cowgirls tallied the next two to push set point, but UW-Whitewater battled. The final three points came courtesy of a pair of HSU attack errors before Gaby DiMotto (New Berlin, Wis./West) put the set away with a kill.

The Cowgirls took an early 2-0 lead in set two. The Warhawks responded with three straight to take the lead and wouldn't trail the rest of the way. Amanda Hillmann (Cedarburg, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) was fantastic in the set, hitting .556 with six kills while adding a block.

UW-Whitewater outhit Hardin-Simmons in set three, but it was the Cowgirls who extended the match with the 25-23 win.

The Warhawk middles took over in set four. Hardin-Simmons jumped out to a 4-0 lead to open the set. UW-Whitewater continued to battle before capping the match on a 4-0 run of their own. Abbie Dix (Brodhead, Wis./Brodhead) handed UWW match point with a kill before a Cowgirl miscue on an overpass sealed the match. Hillmann and Dix combined for 9 kills in 16 attempts and three blocks in the fourth set.

For the match, Dix hit .306 with 17 kills while Hillmann posted an attack percentage of .375 with 14 kills. DiMotto joined her teammates in double digits with 10 kills.

Aubrie Krzus (Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South) dished out 48 assists in the four-setter adding three blocks.

Defensively, Natalie Lawton (Elmhurst, Ill./IC Catholic Prep) bolstered the backcourt with 22 digs. At the net, Dix registered seven blocks while Hillmann and DiMotto each added five.

UW-Whitewater will host Lawrence and Carroll for a pair of matches Saturday.
