Warhawks Wrap up Fall Invite with 9 champions over 10 draws

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater finished out the singles draws on Day Two of the Warhawk Invite. The Warhawks were crowned champions in six out of the seven draws that featured a UWW men's tennis athlete.

Vitali started his campaign at the #1 singles draw yesterday, and after winning his two matches today was crowned champion of the first singles draw. Vitali moved to the championship round after a 6-1, 6-1 victory followed by a 6-4, 7-6(5) victory in the championship match. Theo Billson (Lindfield, England/BHASVIC) also competed at the top draw, finishing third after falling in the semifinal.

The Warhawks had both spots in the championship match with Tyler Nelson (Waunakee, Wis./Waunakee) and Drew VanFossen. Nelson reached the championship after winning a close third set tiebreaker. VanFossen cruised to face his teammate after a 6-2, 6-2 semifinal victory. The two matched up on September 9th, with VanFossen narrowly coming out on top with a 6-7(3), 7-6(4), 10-8 victory.

Charles Morgan (Naperville, Ill./Central) and Will Ulrich (Lincoln, Neb./Pius X) also met as foes in the championship match at the #3 singles draw. Morgan was coming off a quick 6-0, 6-2 victory in the semifinal with Ulrich reaching on a 6-4, 6-2 match. Morgan would eventually be crowned champion, defeating his teammate 7-5, 6-1 in the championship bout.

At #4 singles draw, Andrew Dumbauld (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) upset the top-seeded Domanski from Wabash on Friday, 6-0, 6-3. Carrying the momentum into Saturday, Dumbauld won his last two matches 6-3, 6-1 and 6-4, 6-3 to take the crown.

Chase Lindwall (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) made it two the championship match after two very similar matches. In the first set of each match, Lindwall grinded out a 7-5 set. But the second set of the two matches saw Lindwall dropping just one game between the two. In the championship round against Olivet Nazarene, Lindwall collected a 6-0, 6-3 victory.

Parker Sprague (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) also had his name in the #5 singles draw finishing third overall. His semifinal match was decided by a 10-6 third set tiebreaker. In the third place match, Sprague played a lengthy game. After his opponent from Wabash won the second set in a close set tiebreaker, the two went into a 16-14 battle for the third-set tiebreaker.

In the #6 singles draw, Keith Moeller claimed the Warhawks 9th crown of the invite. Moeller advanced to the semifinal after a close 7-6(4), 7-5 victory of Olivet Nazarene. Moeller then sealed the championship with a 6-3, 6-4 final match.
