The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team could not hold off a late push by Wartburg College on Sunday evening, with Wartburg forcing a draw after a goal in the 85th-minute.
For the second consecutive year, the Warhawk/Knight Cup ends in a draw, with Wartburg maintaining possession of the Cup since 2022 when they won 3-2 in Waverly, Iowa.
First Half
Both teams looked defensive-minded in the first half, as neither team had many great looks on net.
The Warhawks were on target with their chances, putting three shots on goal from their five total shots. Wartburg wasn't as accurate, taking five shots, but none on goal.
Each team had two corner-kick opportunities in the first 45-minutes of the defensive battle.
Second Half
The second half shifted a bit more offensively for both teams, as the shot totals went up substantially.
The Warhawks netted the first goal of the contest, with
Hayden Saul (Iowa City, Iowa/Liberty) finding the back of the net off a pass from
Mason Diercks (Oregon, Wis./Oregon) in the 66th-minute.
Saul's goal was the first goal in the Warhawk/Knight Cup in two years as the 2023 match finished in a 0-0 draw.
Down a goal, Wartburg needed to find the equalizer. The Knights took 12 shots in the second half with three on goal. But they only needed one through, finding the equalizer in the 85th minute to tie up the game.
As time was waning, both teams looked for the game-winner, but neither team got a shot off in the final 5-minutes of the contest.
