Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Warhawks defeat Westminster 1-0; Nichols with PK Goal

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team defeated Westminster-Missouri off of a Peyton Nichols (Green Bay, Wis./Bayport) penalty kick in the 59th minute. The lone goal was the difference as the Warhawks remain undefeated on Fiskum Field.

First Half
Both teams came out of the gates physical, with four free kicks from fouls awarded in the first 10 minutes of the game.

The Warhawks took the first look of the night, with Tucker Jahns (Elburn, Ill./Kaneland) shot bouncing off the post for Miles Hagen (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way West) to put it on net. The Westminster keeper made the save, keeping the Warhawks off the board.

Aidain Martin also had a near miss, with his shot bouncing off the top post in the 26th-minute.

Only minutes later, Fionnbharr Hartnett (Oconomowoc, Wis./Oconomowoc) caught the goalie out of position, but a Blue Jay defender was able to make the play on Hartnett's header to keep it out of the back of the net.

The Blue Jays had their own offensive attack late in the half, taking two shots on goal in the last 10 minutes before the break. Matthew Vollmer (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) made the play on both, finishing the first 45-minutes scoreless for both teams.

Second Half
After the break, the Warhawks looked ready to find their first goal of the night, after a breakaway play from Cooper Re (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) drew a penalty in the box, the Warhawks had the opportunity to take the lead in the close contest.

Peyton Nichols (Green Bay, Wis./Bayport) answered the call & put the ball in the top right to give the Warhawks the 1-0 lead.

The attack didn't stop there, with the Warhawks looking for a second goal. The Blue Jays keeper & defenders stay strong though, turning away all four shots on goal in the closing minutes.

The Warhawk defense closed out the game only allowing two shots on goal in the second half.
