The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team split the double-header with Platteville on Wednesday afternoon, bouncing back after a 7-4 loss in the first game. The Warhawks took the second game 6-4, finishing the regular season 3-1 against UW-Platteville.
The first game began with three Pioneer runs in the first two innings of the first game. The Warhawks answered back in the top of the third, with
Aaron Holland (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) opening up scoring, hitting in a run.
Matt Scolan (Downers Grove, Ill./South) cleared Holland off the bases, hitting a two-run homer in the third to tie it up 3-3.
The Pioneers answered back with two more runs, extending to a 5-3 lead. Scolan recorded another RBI in the top of the fifth, but two more runs from UW-Platteville gave them game one, 7-4.
UW-Platteville looked to take the second game as well, putting a string of hits together in the bottom of the first. After shutting the Warhawks out for the first three innings, the Pioneers had a 3-0 lead into the fourth.
UW-Whitewater got the bats going in the top of the fourth, closing down the lead.
Dominik McVay (Mineral Point, Wis./Mineral Point) had a 2-RBI single to give the Warhawks their first two runs.
The next inning,
Danny Hopper (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) had a 2-RBI double, giving the Warhawks their first lead of the day at 4-3. UW-Platteville tied it back up in the same frame. With the score tied 4-4 heading into the 7th, the Warhawks took the lead from a
Sam Paden (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) sacrifice fly. Another insurance run from an
Andy Thies (Tallahassee, Fla./Lawton Chiles) RBI single gave the Warhawks a 6-4 lead.
With two innings left at-bat, the Pioneers looked to make the sweep, but the Warhawk defense stayed strong. A double-play to end the 8th inning, followed by three-up-three-down in the bottom of the 9th sealed the 6-4 win.
On the mound in the second game,
Cade Hansen (New Braunfels, Texas/Smithson Valley) picked up the win. Hansen struck out four batters in his 3.1 innings.
Logan Eisenbarth (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) relived Hansen in the 9th, earning the save as well, Eisenbarth only needed three batters to retire the side.
The Warhawks have one more game left this week, heading to Madison to play Edgewood in a non-conference game. First pitch is set for 5 PM with a varsity reserve game to follow.
