The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater extended a 10-year winning streak against UW-Stout with a 4-0 sweep in a four game series. The last two games wrapped up Saturday afternoon, with a 9-6 win followed by a 6-0, one-hitter in the second game.
In the first game, Stout gained a quick 2-0 lead after three innings, but the Warhawks were able to take control of the game with a 4-run third inning with the help of a base-clearing double from
Darryl Jackson (Milwaukee, Wis./Rufus King).Â
Stout would add on another run in the top of the fourth, but the Warhawks were able to answer back with 5 more runs over the next three innings, shutting Stout's offense down.Â
With the Warhawks up 9-3 heading into the eighth, the Blue Devils started to string together some hits. Stout came within 3 at 9-6, but Daniel Hopper was able to get the Warhawks out of the game, picking up the save.
Batting in the first game,
Darryl Jackson (Milwaukee, Wis./Rufus King) collected 4 RBIs, going 2 for 4 at the plate. Both of Jackson's hits were doubles.Â
In the second game,
Michael Hilker Jr. (Yorkville, Ill./York) started out the game with 9 straight strikeouts. With Hilker controlling things on the mound, the Warhawks put together a four-run inning in the bottom of the third, giving them a 4-0 lead.Â
It took Stout till the top of the fourth to put the ball in play, but three weak fly balls were easily put out by the Warhawks. The Blue Devils finally got a base on balls in the bottom of the first, but the Warhawks caught him stealing the next at bat.Â
In the bottom of the seventh, the Warhawks added another run to put them up 5-0.
Dominik McVay (Mineral Point, Wis./Mineral Point) singled in another run in the bottom of the eighth.
Stout finally got a hit in the Top of the 9th, but the Warhawk defense caught the runner on his way to third, only giving him a double. With two more strikeouts, the Warhawks finished out the 6-0 win.
Hilker Jr. pitched 8.1 innings before allowing a hit, totaling 17 strikeouts, tied for second most in Warhawk history.
The Warhawks will remain at home for their next series, taking on UW-Oshkosh in a four-game series. The first doubleheader will begin at 12 PM on April 6th.Â
