The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball started off strong before a rain delay halted the game. After returning to the field, the Warhawks closed out the Sewanee Tigers with some efficient pitching, picking up the 6-1 win on Friday night.
The Warhawks jumped out to a quick lead only two-innings into the game. A bases-loaded walk sent the Warhawks first run in, followed by two more in the top of the second.
Eli Frank (Bayport, Wis./Bay Port) hit a sacrifice fly for
Dominik McVay (Mineral Point, Wis./Mineral Point), and a
Sam Paden (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) single scored
Darryl Jackson (Milwaukee, Wis./Rufus King).
The Tigers would answer back with a run of their own in the second, but the Warhwaks maintained the lead.
In the top of the 5th, the Warhawks added a string of runs, capitalizing on some strong hitting and Sewanee errors. In the bottom of the fifth, the Warhawks retired the first two batters, the third Tiger batter hit a deep ball to center field, but a great throw by Daryl Jackson caught the runner as he was sliding into third.
With the Warhawks up 6-1 heading into the 6th, the game was halted due to a thunderstorm rolling in off the Gulf.
After play resumed, the Warhawks built off of their offense with strong defense. With three different pitchers in the final four innings, UW-Whitewater only allowed two hits.
