Warhawk Tennis Sweeps Singles Flights on their way to 8-1 Victory over Carthage

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater defeated Carthage Tennis on Friday night. The Warhawks swept the singles matches on their way to an 8-1 victory over the Firebirds. 

The night started off with 3 close doubles matches. With all of the games finishing 8-6. UW-Whitewater's #1 pair of Luke VanDonslear (Marion, Iowa/Linn Mar) & reuben Giorgio defeated their opponents, 8-6 as well as the #3 pair of Drew Van Fossen (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) & Theo Billson (Brighton, UK/BHASVIK) at #3 doubles. 

The #2 doubles flight was the lone Firebirds win of the night, with the Carthage pair picking up the 8-6 win. 

In the singles matches, the Warhawks went 6-0, but there were some close matches throughout the night. Reuben Giorgio (Perth, Western Australia/Applecross) & Carthage's Myles Krzewinski had the longest match of the night. Krzewinski took the first set in a tight 6-4 battle. Giorgio stormed back in the second set, forcing a tiebreaker. Giorgio picked up that set after winning the tiebreaker 11-9. The match went into a third set tiebreaker, where Giorgio came out victorious 10-7 in a 2 hour long match. 

Both Drew Van Fossen (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) & Tyler Nelson (Waunakee, Wis./Waunakee) had 90+ minute matches. At #3 singles, Nelson fell to Carthage's Elios Briand, 6-1 in the first set. However, after taking the second set 6-4, Nelson took the third set with a deciding 6-1 third set. 

For Van Fossen, he opened up his #4 singles match strong, with a 6-0 first set against Carthage's Diego Silva. Silva fought back in the second set, taking the set in a tiebreaker 7-3. Van Fossen grabbed back the momentum in the third set, securing the match with a 6-1 victory.

In the exhibition matches of the night, UW-Whitewater went 2-0 in the doubles flights before splitting 2-2 with Carthage in the singles flights.
