Warhawks Take Close One against Grinnell College

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's tennis team defeated #36 ranked Grinnell College. The #25 Warhawks went 2-1 in the opening doubles matches before taking the singles matches, 4-2. A closely battled dual meet, 4 of the 6 singles matches went into a third set match tie break.

The Warhawks opened up the dual leading after the doubles flight 2-1. Luke VanDonslear (Marion, Iowa/Linn Mar) & Reuben Giorgio (Perth, Western Australia/Applecross), finished a 30 minute match at the #1 doubles flight with a 8-2 victory. 

Tyler Nelson (Waunakee, Wis./Waunakee) & Drew Van Fossen (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) competed in a back-and-forth doubles match that lasted almost an hour. The pair split nearly every game in the set, forcing a tiebreaker. The #2 doubles pair from Grinnell pulled out the win in the tiebreaker after a well fought match.

Van Fossen was the first singles match to finish at the #4 singles flight with a 6-4, 6-1 victory.

At #1 singles, VanDonslear went into a third set match tiebreaker against Wilder Cooke. After VanDonslear took the first set 6-3, Cooke ending up taking the second set 6-2. VanDonslear came out on top in the tiebreaker, winning four straight rallies in the final set. 

Nelson and Grinnell's Leo Esztergomi battled in the #3 singles flight, going into another third set match tiebreaker. After falling in the first set, Nelson bounce back to take the second set 6-3. After going back & forth in the tiebreaker, Esztergomi picked up the win to keep Grinnell in the dual meet, 4-2.

The Warhawks secured the victory at #2 singles, with Giorgio winning another third set match tiebreaker. After Grinnel's Lucas Willett won the first set 6-1, Giorgio came storming back, picking up the second set 6-1 before winning his match 10-7 in the tiebreaker. 

In the final single matches of the day, Theo Billson (Brighton, UK/BHASVIK) took the #5 singles flight, 6-4, 6-4. In the #6 singles flight, Payton Adkisson (Lincolnshire, Ill./Stevenson) forced another third set match tie break. After falling in the first set, Adkisson battled back with five straight rallies in the second set tie break. Adkisson and Grinnell's Aiden Klass went back and forth in an exciting third set match tie break. Klass took the final two rallies, winning the tiebreak 10-8.
