Box Score The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater advances to the second round of the 2024 WIAC Men's Tournament after defeating UW-Stevens Point, 4-1 on Wednesday night.
First Half
The Warhawks jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead, with
Faizan Mohiuddin (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) scoring in the 11th minute. Mohiuddin's shot from outside of the box, hit a Pointer defender on it's way to the goal.
With a 1-0 lead, the game turned very defensive, as the ball stayed in the midfield for a majority of the half.Â
With about 6-minutes before the break, UW-Stevens Point tallied their first shot of the night, but it was easily saved by
Matthew Vollmer (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich).Â
Second Half
The Warhawks didn't take long to extend their lead into the second half, with a foul inside the box.
Peyton Nichols (Green Bay, Wis./Bayport) put the Warhawks up 2-0 after connecting on the penalty kick.
A few minutes later, Connor Urban got the Pointers on the board. Urban put on in the top right corner from well outside the box.
The Warhawks held off the intense offensive pressure from UW-Stevens Point. The Pointers recorded 5 corner kicks in the final 20 minutes and multiple long throw-ins.Â
In the 83rd-minute, Mohiuddin scored his second goal of the night for the bracer. Mohiuddin had a near-perfect shot to the opposite corner of the goal from the top of the box off of a pass from
Aidian Martin (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls).
UW-Stevens Point had to turn up the pressure on offense to keep their play-off hopes alive, but the Warhawks set-up the counter attack.
Sam Bilyk (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park & River Forest) had the long breakaway goal in the 89th-minute to put the Warhawks up for good.Â
