The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team held off UW-Oshkosh on a Wednesday night conference showdown. The Warhawks opened up the goal with a three-goal lead, but the Titans came within one at the half.
First Half
It was all UW-Whitewater in the first thirty minutes of the game, scoring three goals right away to take a huge lead in a key WIAC match-up.
The first goal came from
Belle Blauert (Anoka, Minn./) who finished off the corner-set piece from
Emily Thill (West Chicago, Ill./St. Francis).
Maya Rebic (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community) added the second one after a continued offensive attack by the Warhawks. The Titan goalie made the save on a shot from
Gianna Zamborini (Louisville, Ken/duPont Manual) but Rebic was there to collect the rebound for the goal.
Thill added the third straight goal for the Warhawks from about 20 yards out. Thill's ricocheted off the cross bar and the UWO goalie before crossing the line to put the Warhawks up 3-0.
In the final 15 minutes of the half, UW-Oshkosh found their own two goals, making it a much different game heading into the break
Second Half
With the three goal lead down to just one, the Warhawks fended off the Titans' attempted to tie the game up coming out of halftime.
The Warhawks turned defense into offense, earning a corner-kick after a counter-attack. Zamborini took the kick with
Belle Blauert (Anoka, Minn./) heading it in for her second goal of the night.
UW-Oshkosh came back within one goal, scoring in the 77th minute. The Titans put four more shots up in the closing minutes, but the Warhawk defense held, not giving them any easy looks with all four going off target.
