The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team defeated the Foresters on a rainy evening in Lake Forest. Two first half goals from the Warhawks was the difference, with UW-Whitewater coming away with the 3-1 win.
First Half
The Warhawks didn't take long to find the game-opening goal, with their very first shot on goal ending up in the back of the net in the 14th minute.
Cooper Re (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) broke out on the offensive attack after a through-pass from
Luka Breslin (Dublin, Ireland/Terenure College) and
Mason Diercks (Oregon, Wis./Oregon) to open the night for UWW.
Not long after, the Warhawks second shot of the half also ended up in the back of the net.
Aidian Martin (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) showed off his accuracy from about 20 yards out.
Miles Hagen (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way West) put pressure on the wing, before swinging it over to Martin for the goal.
The Warhawks entered the break up 2-0, holding Lake Forest to just one shot on goal in the first 45.
Second Half
UW-Whitewater extended their lead to three goals, scoring in the 60th minute. The Warhawks put pressure on the Foresters' keeper after two shots on goal both led to corner kicks. The second corner kick led to a
James Kiraly (Twin Lakes, WI/Wilmot Union) goal with assists going to Martin and Re.
The Foresters had a chance for their own mark on the scoreboard, with a penalty kick in the 78th minute. Warhawk goalkeeper
Matthew Vollmer (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) made the read, saving the penalty kick attempt and bounced right back up to make the save on the rebound shot.
Lake Forest added their own goal, after a free kick set them up for a set piece. The Foresters headed the ball in with 10:30 remaining in the game.Â
Vollmer and the Warahwk defenders kept Lake Forest from finding another goal, with Vollmer making three saves in the final minutes of the half.
