Warhawk Track and Field Opens Season at Home

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's and women's track and field teams opened the 2024 indoor season at home hosting the annual Karl Schlender Invitational Saturday. The Warhawk men and women each finished first in six-team fields.

The UWW men claimed gold in seven events Saturday. In the fastest event, Myles Anderson (Milwaukee, Wis./Lutheran) was the first to cross the line with a time of 6.88 in the 60 meter dash. Six Warhawks finished among the top eight in the 200. Ben Bojar (Pewaukee, Wis./Pewaukee) paced the group with a time of 23.07 for first while Nick McFadden (Waukesha, Wis./Pewaukee) was the runner-up with a clocking of 23.18. 

Kobe Chandler (Beloit, WI/Memorial) was tops in the 400 with a time of 49.59. UWW swept the top three spot in the mile. Gunner Schlender (Brillion, Wis./Brillion) was the first to cross with a time of 4:18.34 followed by Christian Patzka (Black Earth, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) just two-tenths back. Dan Anderson (Eau Claire, Wis./McDonell) took bronze with a time of 4:27.46. 

In the 600 meter run, Justin Krause (Ixonia, Wis./Pewaukee) led a five Warhawk contingent to finish in the top eight. He was the runner-up with a time of 1:25.10. Tucker Johnson (Poynette, Wis./Poynette) and Alex Metko (Brillion, Wis./Brillion) finished back-to-back in second and third in the 800. The pair posted times of 2:03.32 and 2:05.66 respectively. Tamir Thomas (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) and Marlon Cystrunk (DeForest, Wis./DeForest) followed suit with second and third in the 60 hurdles. Thomas was clocked in 8.39 with Cystrunk right behind with 8.41. 

UWW's Johnson, Drew Davey (Elkhorn, WI/), Keegan Bratt (Waukesha, WI/West) and Nick Hardin (Greenfield, Wis./Whitnall) combined to post a time of 10:48.09 to win the distance medley relay. 

In the field events, Jared Sudbrink (Grafton, Wis./Grafton) and Spencer Steffen (Appleton, Wis./West) had the top height in the high jump, 1.85 meters, with Sudbrink claiming first on jumps. Shelvin Garrett II (Beloit, Wis./Memorial) won the triple jump with a leap of 14.75 meters. Jordan Hall (Elkhorn, Wis./Elkhorn) took bronze in the event with a jump of 13.74 meters.

Five Warhawk pole vaulters swept second through seventh led by Brady Schaller's (Winnebago, Ill./Winnebago) 4.12 meters. Sean Larsen (Waukesha, Wis./South) led UWW in the throws with a runner-up finish in the weight throw. His heave was measured at 15.71 meters.

The UW-Whitewater women claimed the top of the standings in six events Saturday. Paige Fassbender (Slinger, Wis./Slinger) was the first to cross the line in the 600 with a time of 1:40.84. Katie Erb (Winnebago, Ill./Winnebago) was third in the event with a clocking of 1:46.56. 

Ari De La Cerda (Milwaukee, Wis./Pewaukee) paced the pack in the mile. Her clocking of 5:18.73 was the fastest at the meet. A pair of Warhawks secured first and second in the 60 hurdles. Lena Becker (Toulon, Ill./Stark County) led the way with a time of 9.67 followed by Morgan Amend's (Markesan, Wis./Markesan) clocking of 10.25. 

Jacqueline Kornowski (Green Bay, Wis./Preble) led a three-Warhawk contingent to add points to the team total in the 60 with a time of 8.01. Jocelyn Ramirez (Jefferson, WI/) added second place points for UWW in the 800 with a time of 2:34.40. 

The UW-Whitewater women competed in a pair of relays. The foursome of Renee Forystek (Waukesha, WI/North), Emma Shingledecker (New Berlin, Wis./West), Kayla Fogarty (Holt, MI/) and Payton Scoggin (Kenosha, Wis./Indian Trails) won the distance medley relay with a time of 13:43.66. Fassbender led off the 4x400 squad that included Erb, Fogarty and Abby Motz (New Berlin, WI/Eisenhower). The combination crossed the line in 4:28.39 for third.

Danielle Pouska (Algonquin, IL/Jacobs) posted the best high jump mark on the day with a height of 1.53 meters. Rebecca Lawrence (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) took third in the event with a height of 1.48 meters. Gracie Holland (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield) registered a height of 3.89 meters to claim the pole vault title. Ella Maher (Rockford, Ill./Winnebago) and Carleen Snow (Rio, Wis./DeForest) tied for bronze with a height of 3.14 meters. 

Ava Falk (Kaneland, IL/) was the runner-up in the triple jump with a leap of 10.47 meters. Kenni Czarnecki (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) added second place points to the team total with a toss of 16.29 meters in the weight throw.
