During their road match on Wednesday night, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team held off a late push from the Wheaton Thunder. With a one-goal cushion late in the game, the Warhawks held off the rolling Thunder, securing the 3-2 win.
The Warhawks got the scoring started as
Allie Prigge (Palatine, Ill./Fremd) collected a deflection by the Wheaton defender and lofted the ball over the head of the keeper. The Warhawks wouldn't hold on to the lead for long, as only six minutes later, Emily Setran of Wheaton scored the equalizer off a first touch.
The game looked like it would be a 1-1 tie heading into the break, but
Gianna Zamborini (Louisville, Ken/duPont Manual) gave UW-Whitewater the bracer. A well-placed through ball by
Maya Rebic (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community) led Zamborini to a great 1-on-1 opportunity against the keeper. Zamborini connected and gave the Warhawks the lead going into the half.
The Warhawks added on another goal early in the second half; a corner kick shot bounced off the head of a Wheaton defender into the net for a Warhawk goal, putting UW-Whitewater up 3-1.
UW-Whitewater held the Thunder off defensively, but Wheaton looked to keep the game going as they scored with seven minutes left in the game, closing the margin to 3-2.
The Warhawks held off the final push and secured the 3-2 win. UW-Whitewater was accurate with their shots tonight, with nine total shots and five on goal. Wheaton matched the five shots on goal, with
Jude Dobrinska (Milwaukee, Wis./Ronald Reagan College Prep) saving three of those, playing the entire 90 minutes.
Women's Soccer will head to Eau Claire for their next game. The Warhawks kick off the conference schedule, taking on the Blugolds at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 30th.
