The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Women's Soccer team took a 2-0 lead late in the game over Carthage, and held off the Carthage comeback to secure the 2-1 win on Wednesday night.
The first half was a methodical showing by both teams on the defensive end. The Warhawks fell back into a defensive game to keep Carthage from scoring, and the Firebirds did not allow much attack from the Warhawks offense in the first half. Both teams remained tied at the half.
Things picked up in the second half for the Warhawks, scoring the go-ahead goal at the 63-minute mark.
Gianna Zamborini (Louisville, Ken/duPont Manual) picked up the goal off the assist from
Juliana Madonia (Schaumburg, Ill./James B. Conant).
Playing with a 1-0 lead, UW-Whitewater kept up the pressure on the offensive end. The Warhawks finally found the bracer goal, after a corner kick opportunity. Carthage collected the corner and tried to clear it, but
Allie Prigge (Palatine, Ill./Fremd) swooped in and turned the clear into a successful corner play.Â
Carthage added on a goal with 11 seconds left, but had little time after the kickoff to add on the tying goal.
The Warhawks will take the field next Sunday, September 14th, against Carleton College for their Alumni Appreciation game. The kick-off is set for 1:30 PM.
