The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's tennis team took second in the Warhawk Invite this Saturday. The Warhawks earned 1 gold, three silvers, a bronze, and a consolation championship over the six draws.
The Warhawks totaled 40 team points, only one point behind Grinnell, who finished with 41 to secure first in the Invite. Luther was only one point behind the Warhawks, finishing 3rd with 39 points. UW-Eau Claire and UW-La Crosse tied with 28 points each, followed by Carthage (19), Augustana (14), and UW-Oshkosh (13).
In the #1 singles draw,
Cassie Lee (Downers Grove, Ill./Timothy Christian) played a close first set (7-5) with Luther's Abby Ostermann. Lee advanced after a 6-1 second set and defeated UW-Eau Claire's Sam Fuchs 7-5, 6-3. She would then go on to secure the gold over Xingchen Liu from Carthage, 6-2, 7-5.
Gracie Ha (Palatine, Ill./Fremd) started as the #1 seed in the bracket for the #2, she picked up two wins over Lauren Lindow (UW-La Crosse) and Sydney Presle (UW-Eau Claire). Ha met-up with Grinnell's Irene Agusti in the championship match. Ha played a close match with Agusti, falling 6-4, 7-5.
Alex Repplier (Champlin,MN/Champlin Park) picked up the silver in the #3 draw, defeating her first and second round opponents in less than 8 total games per set. In the championship match, Reeplier met Isa Voinescu from Grinnel, the first set went into a tiebreaker, with Voinescu picking up the set with a 7-2 tiebreaker. Repplier lost the second set 6-0, coming out of the tough match-up with the silver.
For the double's squads, the #1 draw featured
Kellie Ha (Palatine, Ill./Fremd) and
Molly Asfeld (Waukesha, Wis./West). Seeded #3 to start the bracket, the pair picked up a close win in the first round, 8-7(3). After winning the second round game, Ha and Asfeld moved on to the championship match. They met with the pair from Luther, and fell 8-4, picking up another silver for the Warhawks.
MacKenzie Lindow (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) and
Megan Griswold (Oconomowoc, Wis./Oconomowoc) finished out the #2 draw with two wins after losing in the first round. The pair won the consolation final over Augustana, 8-5.
The #3 doubles draw for Whitewater was
Ashley Adkisson (Licolnshire, IL/Stevensen) and Sara Ferguson. After winning their first match over UW-Oshkosh (8-2), the pair fell to Luther, 8-2. Adkisson and Ferguson bounced back in the 3rd place match, defeating the pair form UW-Eau Claire, 8-2.
The Warhawks continue their opening home stretch on Sunday, September 10th. They will take on WIAC opponent UW-River Falls.
