The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team swept the series against UW-Platteville with a pair of wins Saturday afternoon in Whitewater. The Warhawks won the opener 7-5 and game two 19-8 in seven innings. UWW recognized its 2023 senior class in between games.
UWW wraps up the regular season 15-9 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play. The Warhawks will enter the WIAC tournament as the number three seed. UW-Stevens Point is the top seed and will host the tournament starting Thursday.
The Pioneers took an early lead in game one plating two in the top of the fourth but the Warhawks responded with four in the bottom of the frame.
Sam Paden (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) opened the scoring with a solo homer before
David Rubin (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) drove in a run on a double and the Warhawks plated two more on a pair of miscues.
The teams traded runs in the seventh before UW-Platteville knotted the game in the top of the eighth. The Warhawks plated a pair in the bottom of the eighth off of
Eli Frank's (Bayport, Wis./Bay Port) RBI single and
Adam Cootway's (DePere, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) RBI single up the middle.
Jacob DeMeyer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) was a perfect 4-4 at the plate. Cootway added another RBI to his series tally, increasing it to 13 on the weekend, with a 3-4 performance in the batter's box.
Michael Hilker Jr. (Yorkville, Ill./York) registered the win in 2.0 innings of relief. He struck out four and allowed a single run to improve to 2-1 on the season.
The Warhawk offense broke out in the second blasting 23 hits and scoring 19 runs to cruise to the series sweep. Paden led UWW at the plate with a 5-5 performance adding four RBI and three runs scored.
Cade Berendt (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) picked up the win in game two. He struck out four in 4.1 innings of work.
