The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team dropped their first game of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament hosted by UW-Stevens Point Thursday afternoon. UWW fell to UW-La Crosse 14-4 in seven innings and will face top-seeded UWSP Friday at 10 a.m.
The Pointers lost their opening round matchup 5-3 to UW-Oshkosh in the first game of the day Thursday.
The Warhawks got on the board first as
Adam Cootway (DePere, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) singled to right field to plate
Donovan Brandl (Rudolph, Wis./Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln) for the early 1-0 UWW lead in the top of the first.
UW-La Crosse responded with a seven-spot in the bottom of the frame, six of those runs were unearned.
UW-Whitewater added another run in the third on
Matt Scolan's (Downers Grove, Ill./South) solo blast to left field before plating two in the fifth, but the margin was too large.
Scolan and Cootway led the Warhawk offense with two hits each combining for two RBI and two runs scored.
Max Huseboe (Ripon, Wis./Ripon) suffered the loss on the mound allowing a single earned run in 0.2 innings of work.
Carson Bresser (Waupun, Wis./Waupun),
Eli Frank (Bayport, Wis./Bay Port) and
Cade Hansen (New Braunfels, Texas/Smithson Valley) closed out the game for UWW.
