Thirteen Warhawks will represent the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater at the 2023 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Polisseni Track and Field Complex in Rochester, New York this week. The outdoor championships, hosted by St. John Fisher University and Rochester NY Sports Commission, are slated to run May 25-27.
Justin Krause (Ixonia, Wis./Pewaukee) will be the first Warhawk in action at the championships, taking to the track for the prelims of the 1500 Thursday at 5:30 p.m. Krause, an indoor All-American in the event, finished second at the WIAC Championships earlier this month in the 1500. He goes into the 2023 Outdoor Championships holding the 11th-fastest time in Division III, 3:46.84.
Tina Shelton (Janesville, Wis./Parker) will make her 2023 outdoor debut in the prelims of the 200 Thursday at 7:20 p.m. The WIAC Champion in the event, Shelton's season best time of 24.41 is 12th nationally. Shelton is also the Division III leader in the 100-meter dash. Her clocking of 11.54 won the WIAC title and is the best in the nation so far. The prelims of the 100 are scheduled for Friday at 6:15. Shelton was an indoor qualifier in the 60 and 200 this season.
Christian Patzka (Black Earth, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) will take to the track his first of two events at the outdoor championships Thursday. Holding the third-fastest time in the 3,000 steeplechase heading into the championship meet, 8:47.74, the WIAC champion will compete in the prelims at 7:35 p.m. Patzka, the reigning indoor national champion in the 5,000, will go far a season sweep in the event at 4 p.m. Saturday. He holds the second-fastest clocking in Division III, 13:55.36 heading into the meet.
Fellow distance runner
Gunner Schlender (Brillion, Wis./Brillion) will run in the first of his two events at the championship, the 10,000 meter final, at 9:05 Thursday night. He holds the fifth-fastest time nationally heading into the meet, 29:20.58. Schlender will join Patzka in the field for the 5,000 Saturday evening. The WIAC champion in the event boasts the seventh-fastest time in Division III this season, 14:00.15.
Marlon Cystrunk (DeForest, Wis./DeForest) will lead off the Warhawks in action Friday. Cystrunk is seeded 22nd in the 110-meter hurdles and will compete in the prelims at 5 p.m. The bronze medalist at the WIAC Championships holds a seed time of 14.50.
Kobe Chandler (Beloit, WI/Memorial) will follow in the prelims of the 400 slated to start at 5:30 p.m. The third-place finisher at the conference championship meet, Chandler is seeded 22nd with a time of 47.83 heading into the national meet.
Gracie Holland (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield), the defending indoor national champion, and
Margaret Helbig (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park and River Forest) will get underway in the pole vault Friday at 6 p.m. Holland, the WIAC gold medalist in the event, is seeded fifth at a height of 3.91 meters. Helbig finished as the runner-up at the league championship and goes into the NCAA meet seeded 18th with a height of 3.76 meters.
Back on the track,
Paige Fassbender (Slinger, Wis./Slinger) will look to qualify for the finals in the 800. The prelims of the event are slated for 6:45 p.m. Friday. Fassbender finished fifth at the WIAC Championships and heads into the national meet ranked 14th with a time of 2:11.33.
Four Warhawk field athletes will be in action Saturday.
Josh Krystosek (Palmyra, Wis./Palmyra-Eagle), the WIAC bronze medalist, is the 22nd qualifier in the high jump with a height of 2.02 meters. He'll open competition at 10 a.m.
Kenni Czarnecki (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) will also be in action at that time competing in the women's hammer throw. Czarnecki finished third in the league championship and her season-best heave of 55.26 meters is seeded eighth nationally.
Shelvin Garrett II (Beloit, Wis./Memorial) and
Brayden Zettle (Monroe, Wis./Monroe) will represent UWW in the triple jump beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday. Garrett, an indoor All-American after finishing fifth at the national meet in March, is seeded third with a leap of 15.27 meters heading into the outdoor championships. Zettle also qualified for the indoor championships and heads into the outdoor meet with the eighth-best triple jump distance, 15.05 meters, in the nation. The pair finished second and third at the conference championship respectively.
