John Zakowski (Green Bay, Wis./Southwest), a senior on the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's tennis team, earned All-America honors in singles competition at the NCAA Division III Championships for the second consecutive season.
Zakowski defeated Occidental's Matthew O'Connor 7-5, 6-2 to advance to the round of 16 Thursday and claim All-America honors. In the round of 16, Zakowski met Karl Hoegstedt of Washington College. Facing a 5-1 deficit in the first set, Zakowski battled back to tie it up 5-5. He went on to take the first set 7-6(3).Â
Zakowski took a 3-1 lead in the second before Hoegstedt came back to win 7-5 and force a third set. Hoegstedt had the momentum and claimed the win with a 6-1 victory in the third.
The New Jersey Athletic Conference West Division Player of the Year for the second consecutive season caps his 2022-23 campaign with a 19-9 record in singles play. Zakowski competed in singles and doubles competition at the NCAA Division III Championships last season advancing to the round of 16 in singles play.Â
