Baseball Tops Stout Twice to Sweep Series

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team defeated UW-Stout by run-rule twice Monday afternoon to sweep the four-game series against the Blue Devils. The Warhawks won the opener 18-2 and the nightcap 15-5, both in seven innings.

UWW blasted 15 hits in the first game plating runs in six of seven innings including five in the first frame. Matt Korman (Waterford, Wis./Waterford Union) got the Warhawks on the board with a bases-clearning double to right center that game UWW a 3-0 lead and they never looked back.

Adam Cootway (DePere, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) and Bennett Frazer (Oconto, Wis./Oconto) both registered three hits to lead the Warhawk offense. The pair combined for five RBI and five runs scored. Of the 15 hits, 8 went for extra bases included homeruns from Matt Scolan (Downers Grove, Ill./South), Donovan Brandl (Rudolph, Wis./Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln), Cootway and Charlie Bogue (Mount Horeb, Wis./Mount Horeb)

Cade Berendt (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) picked up the win in five innings on the mound. He struck out seven while allowing a pair of earned runs to improve to 5-2 on the season.

The Blue Devils scored the first run of game two but the Warhawks posted back-to-back four spots in the third and fourth innings to take a handy lead in the game.

Cootway opened the scoring for the Warhawks with a three-run blast in the third. He tagged his second four-bagger, another three run bomb in the fourth.

Eli Frank (Bayport, Wis./Bay Port) matched Cootway's pair of homeruns with a three-run shot in the sixth. He registered a two-run homer in the seventh to give UWW a 15-1 advantage.

Cootway and Frank combined to go 4-6 at the plate with 11 RBI and 6 runs scored.

Brandl got the start and the win for UW-Whitewater. He struck out four while one-hitting the Blue Devils through four innings.
