The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team dropped the final two games of the four-game set with UW-La Crosse Sunday at James B. Miller Stadium in Whitewater. The Warhawks fell 8-2 in the opener and 6-5 in the nightcap.
The Eagles took an early lead in game one but UWW responded in the bottom of the first.
Donovan Brandl (Rudolph, Wis./Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln) tagged a double to right center that plated
Jacob DeMeyer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) and tied the game 1-1.
The Warhawks took the lead in the bottom of the second bringing in another run on
Matt Scolan's (Downers Grove, Ill./South) sacrifice fly to center.
In the top of the third UWL plated three runs and held the Warhawks scoreless the rest of the way en route to the 8-2 final.
UW-Whitewater posted five hits in the contest with two coming off Brandl's bat. He also suffered the loss on the mound in 3.1 innings of work.
Game two was a chess match through the first five innings until the Eagles broke the stalemate with a three-run sixth. UWW responded with a single run in the bottom of the frame.
UW-La Crosse added three cushion runs to take a 6-1 advantage into the bottom of the ninth. The Warhawks put together their most productive frame of the day to nearly push the game to extra innings.
Adam Cootway (DePere, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) led off with an infield single. After a pair of outs, Connor Pease singled to right center as Cootway motored to third to spark a rally. Pease swiped second in the next at bat.
David Rubin (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) singled down the right field line to bring in two runs and
Gabe O'Brien (Eau Claire, Wis./North) followed with a pinch hit double to left center to plate one more and make it 6-4. An Eagle miscue saw another Warhawk touch home but UWL got out of the inning on a lineout to center for the 6-5 final.
Scolan led UWW with two of the team's eight hits in the contest.
Joey Pettit (West Bend, Wis./Marquette University HS) got the start and suffered the loss after striking out seven in 7.1 innings on the mound.
