The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team dropped a pair of games to UW-La Crosse in Whitewater Saturday. The league-leading Eagles took game one 6-4 and game two 8-2.
On a day draped with bouts of snow and sleet, UW-La Crosse was able to capture early leads in both games. The first four batters of game one registered hits with a homerun blast capping the streak to make it 4-0 UWL.
The Warhawks got on the board in the bottom of the second on
Bennett Frazer's (Oconto, Wis./Oconto) RBI groundout. The teams each scored a single run in the third to make it 5-2.
A double from
Jacob DeMeyer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) and a
Donovan Brandl (Rudolph, Wis./Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln) single plated two for UWW in the fourth to cut the margin to one, 5-4.
The Eagles added an insurance run in the top of the fifth to wrap up the scoring in game one.
DeMeyer went 4-5 at the plate to lead the UWW offense.
Cade Berendt (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) suffered the loss on the mound to move to 3-2 on the season.
The Eagles used a pair of doubles in the top of the second to take an early 2-0 lead in game two.
UW-Whitewater responded in the bottom of the third. With one on, Brandl blasted a ball toward right field. The Eagle outfielder sprinted back and lept into the wall as the ball came down on top of the yellow fence guard and bounced back into play. As the outfielder recovered, Brandl motored around the bases safely touching the plate for the inside the park homerun to tie the game 2-2.
Miscues proved costly for UWW in the fourth as an extended inning led to an Eagle score on an error and a three-run homerun. All four runs in the frame were unearned as UWL opened up a 6-2 lead that the Warhawks were unable to come back from.
UW-Whitewater registered just three hits in the second game.
Logan Eisenbarth (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) suffered the loss on the mound to fall to 1-2 on the season.
