The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team swept UW-Eau Claire on a beautiful day at James B. Miller Stadium. The Warhawks won the opener 10-8 and the nightcap 12-3.
Â
The opener of the twinbill was a back-and-forth affair with the teams trading leads until late in the contest. The Blugolds opened the scoring with a solo homer in the top of the first before UWW got out of a bases loaded jam. In the bottom of the frame,
Sam Vomhof (DeForest, Wis./DeForest) claimed the Warhawks' first lead of the game lacing a two-RBI double to left center.
Â
UW-Eau Claire responded with a pair in the top of the second but UWW came back with a four-spot in the bottom of the frame. Vomhof drove in two more with a monster blast to left center.
Alex Najera (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) brought in the other two with a triple down the right field line to make it 6-3.
Â
The Blugolds came back to tie it up after the top of the fifth.
Matt Scolan (Downers Grove, Ill./South) singled to drive in a pair for UWW in the bottom of the frame. Once again, UWEC was able to knot the game 8-8 in the top of the sixth but the Warhawks were not to be outdone.
Â
Matt Korman (Waterford, Wis./Waterford Union) registered the go-ahead RBI on a groundout in the bottom of the sixth. UWW added an insurance run with Najera's second triple of the game, this one a shot to left center.
Â
UW-Whitewater posted 12 hits in the game led by Vomhof's 4-5, 4 RBI, 3 run performance at the plate. Najera was 3-5 with a double and two triples.
Â
