The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team improved to 9-2 on the season after taking the first two games of a four-game series against UW-Eau Claire Tuesday. The Warhawks won a defensive battle in game one 3-2 before unleashing an offensive onslaught in the nightcap for a 16-5 victory in seven innings.
Due to forecasted inclement weather conditions, the final two games of the four-game series have been pushed to April 10 starting a 1 pm.
The Blugolds struck first with a single run in the top of the third. Following a leadoff single, a two-out RBI base knock brought the first run across the plate.
UWW responded in kind as
Donovan Brandl (Rudolph, Wis./Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln) blaste da ball over the right field wall to knot the game 1-1.
Another leadoff single for UWEC in the top of the next frame led to a second Blugold run, but UW-Whitewater had the answer once again.
In the bottom of the fourth,
Adam Cootway (DePere, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) led off with double down the right field line.
Bennett Frazer (Oconto, Wis./Oconto) hit a grounder back to the pitcher and Cootway was caught in between second and third. At one point during the run down, Cootway's path was impeded by a Blugold defender and obstruction was called moving him safely to third to put runners on the corners. Frazer stole second in the next at bat and then with one-out
Matt Scolan (Downers Grove, Ill./South) was intentionally walked to load the bases.
Sam Vomhof (DeForest, Wis./DeForest) capitalized with a RBI sacrifice fly to center field to tie the game.
Matt Korman (Waterford, Wis./Waterford Union) provided the eventual game-winning tally with a RBI single through the left side that brought in Frazer.
UW-Eau Claire threatened in the top of the ninth with a leadoff double. Their second batter up tagged a double but the runner had to hang close to second in order to tag if it was caught and was only able to advance to third. The Warhawks got out of the jam with a fly out and a pair of looking strikeouts from
Michael Hilker Jr. (Yorkville, Ill./York)
Jacob DeMeyer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) led the UWW offense going 3-4 at the plate. Brandle was 2-4 with the four-bagger.
Cade Berendt (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) allowed two runs while striking out six in six innings of work to pick up the win. Hilker Jr. registered the save after securing the final two outs of the game.
The nightcap was a much different affair with 21 runs scored on 26 hits in the contest. The Warhawks scoredd in five of their six at bats including a five-run fourth and four-run fifth. UWW blasted 17 hits in the game including seven extra base knocks bolstered by homerun blasts off the bats of
Matt Scolan (Downers Grove, Ill./South), Vomhof and
Nick Paget (New Berlin, Wis./West).
Four Warhawks posted at least three hits in the contest led by Scolan's 4-5, four-run, three-RBI game at the plate.
Joey Pettit (West Bend, Wis./Marquette University HS) was tapped for the start and picked up the win allowing three earned runs in four innings of work.
