The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team split a doublheader with UW-Oshkosh Sunday afternoon in Whitewater. The doubleheader, originally slated to be played in Oshkosh, was moved to Whitewater due to field conditions. UWW dropped the first game 9-8 before taking the nightcap 17-4 in seven innings.
The final two games of the series are scheduled for Monday, April 3 in Whitewater beginning at noon.
Despite the games being played in Whitewater, UWW was the visiting team as scheduled. The Warhawks took an early lead plating a pair of runs in the top of the first via a single and a Titan miscue.
UWO got on the board in the bottom of the second on a RBI single.
Whitewater erupted in the fourth with
Adam Cootway (DePere, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) sparked the onslaught with a homerun blast to lead off the frame. After an out,
Ryan Norton (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac) drew a walk and
Matt Scolan (Downers Grove, Ill./South) capitalized with a two-run shot. Following a second out,
Sam Vomhof (DeForest, Wis./DeForest) tagged the Warhawks' third four-bagger of the inning to give UWW a 6-1 lead.
The Titans cut the margin to three, 6-3, with two runs in the fifth but UWW responded with a pair of their own in the top of the sixth to make it 8-3.
The Warhawks had base runners but couldn't push runs across the rest of the way. Meanwhile, UWO added two in the seventh and a pair in the eighth to pull within one, 8-7. In the bottom of the ninth, the Titans registered back-to-back homers for the walkoff 9-8 win.
Scolan and Vomhof led UWW with three hits each combining for four RBI and five runs scored.
Michael Hilker Jr. (Yorkville, Ill./York) suffered the loss on the mound in relief for UWW.
The Warhawks had no trouble scoring in the nightcap posting runs in six innings including a six-run seventh. UWW blasted 20 hits in the contest including five for extra bases bolstered by Cootway's second homer of the day.
Jacob DeMeyer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander), Vomhof, Ddonovan Brandl, Cootway andd
Bennett Frazer (Oconto, Wis./Oconto) all tallied three hits in the game to lead UWW at the plate. In total, nine Warhawks registered hits in the contest.
Trey Bretl (Marinette, Wis./Marinette) picked up the win on the mound striking out four in five innings of work.
