The No. 8 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team split a pair of games Monday afternoon in Pensacola, Florida. The Warhawks topped Hendrix 10-5 before falling to top-ranked Birmingham Southern 6-1 in the nightcap.
The Warriors opened the scoring with a single run in the top of the first of game one. The Warhawks responded with a four-spot in their half of the frame.
Nick Paget (New Berlin, Wis./West) tagged a two-RBI double to right field followed by a
Gabe O'Brien (Eau Claire, Wis./North) two-RBI single to right to give UWW a 4-1 lead.
Hendrix plated a pair in the top of the third to cut the margin to one but the Warhawks added a cushion in the fourth.
Sam Vomhof (DeForest, Wis./DeForest) doubled in
Bennett Frazer (Oconto, Wis./Oconto) and then
Matt Korman (Waterford, Wis./Waterford Union) brought in Vomhof on a double to left.
Jacob DeMeyer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) camped the frame with a sacrifice fly to left field to extend the advantage to 7-3.
The Warriors scored single runs in the sixth and the seventh before UWW wrapped up the scoring with three runs in the eighth.
Matt Scolan (Downers Grove, Ill./South) and Vomhof drove in runs with singles to right while Korman registered a sacrifice fly to right for the final, 10-5.
Four Warhawks posted two hits in the game including Scolan, Vomhof, Paget and Frazer.
Michael Hilker Jr. (Yorkville, Ill./York) picked up his first win of the season with 2.1 shutout innings of relief work.
UW-Whitewater went up against a seasoned Birmingham Southern squad in game two. The No. 1 team in the most recent D3baseball.com poll is already 21-2 on the season.
BSC opened with a homer to left field in the top of the second. They added another run in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly to take a 2-0 lead.
Paget put the ball in play as UWW capitalized on a defensive miscue with Frazer coming in to score in the bottom of the fifth.
Birmingham Southern responded with two runs in the sixth and another pair in the seventh for the final.
Vomhof and Frazer posted the only hits for the Warhawks in the contest as
Joey Pettit (West Bend, Wis./Marquette University HS) suffered the loss on the mound after striking out seven and walking just one in five innings of work.
