The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team took down a top 25 opponent, defeating Gustavus Adolphus, who was ranked 23rd in the last United Soccer Coaches poll, 2-0.
The first half was dead even, with both teams taking four shots on goal each and the respective goalies making four saves each. The Gusties had the slight edge in corner opportunities, with five chances to the Warhawks four.
During the second half, UW-Whitewater broke the seal with a throw-in set play. At the 51st-minute mark,
Adam Kaup (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln) took the throw-in from near the corner, and
Cooper Re (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) scored his seventh goal of the season.
Not long after Re's goal,
Miles Hagen (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way West) added a bracer goal. Hagen sent a shot low left after
Hayden Saul (Iowa City, Iowa/Liberty) delivered a through pass through the Gustie defenders.
The Warhawks held off Gustavus Adolphus's attack for the rest of the game, with
Duncan Morgan (Oregon, Wis./Oregon) completing his seventh complete shut-out of the season. Tying the record for most shut-outs in a season since 2011 (
Jake King (McHenry, Ill./McHenry West) also had 7 in 2019). Morgan made nine saves on his way to the shut-out.
The Warhawks remain unbeaten with an 11-0-4 record. Men's soccer faces a huge match-up this upcoming Tuesday, October 10th, against UW-Platteville. Both teams are a part of the C2C conference, and the Pioneers also are unbeaten at 8-0-4.
