The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater battled in a high-scoring, back-and-forth game against UW-Eau Claire for their Friday night match. UW-Eau Claire outshot the Warhawks 24 (13 on goal) to 9 (6 on goal), but UW-Whitewater finished out on top with a 3-2 win.
UW-Whitewater opened scoring first after a throw-in from
Adam Kaup (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln) bounced off the head of
Hayden Saul (Iowa City, Iowa/Liberty) into the net for a Warhawk goal.
UW-Eau Claire went to tie it up in the last three minutes of the half after a penalty kick was awarded. The Blugolds took the lead on a throw-in that bounced off the hands of the Warhawk goalie and two Blugolds before rolling into the net. UW-Eau Claire entered the half up 2-1.
The Warhawks bounced back quickly to tie the game up when a Blugold clear landed at the feet of
Miles Hagen (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way West). Hagen rifled a shot to the top right that the goalie could not stop. The Warhawks tied it only a minute into the second half.
UW-Whitewater regained the lead a few moments later as another Blugold clear landed in the feet of
Matt White (Bangor, Northern Ireland/Bangor Grammar). White chipped the ball over to
Hegan Genua (San Sebastian, Spain/Ekintza Ikastola), who connected on the shot from nearly 30 yards out, putting the Warhawks up 3-2.
The Warhawks kept ahold of their lead for the last 20 minutes, with help from goalkeeper
Matthew Vollmer (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich), who took over at the half. Vollmer had six saves in the second half.
Duncan Morgan (Oregon, Wis./Oregon) made the start and made five saves in his 45 minutes.
The men's soccer team will only rest a day before taking on Gustavus Adolphus on Sunday, October 8th. The match is set to start at 3 PM.
