The No. 6 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater volleyball team dropped a pair of matches to ranked teams in a triangular hosted by North Park in Chicago Friday afternoon. The Warhawks fell to No. 19 North Park 3-2 (17-25, 16-25, 27-25, 25-20, 15-8) and No. 3 Hope College 3-0 (28-26, 25-17, 25-21).
UW-Whitewater won the first two sets handily against the host institution after holding North Park to a negative attack percentage in both sets. The Warhawks went on to have a match point on a service ace from
Jenna Weinfurt (Waukesha, Wis./Catholic Memorial) that made it 25-24, but NPU tallied three straight to win the set and steal away the momentum.
After the host won the fourth, the teams traded four-point runs in the decisive fifth set. The squads traded points until North Park put together another 4-0 run that made it 11-7. UWW stopped the run with a block by
Payton Kuepers (Madison, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) and
Hannah Proctor (Durand, Ill./Durand) but NPU tallied the final four to take the match.
Weinfurt led UWW with 12 kills while
Morgan Jensen (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) paced the Warhawks from the service line with four aces. She added 28 digs in the backcourt. Weinfurt (15) and
Ally Longden (Pewaukee, Wis./Pewaukee) (14) joined Jensen with double figure digs.
Kirsten Anderson (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) led all players with seven assist blocks as the nation's top blocking team tallied 13 on the match.
UW-Whitewater pushed the third-ranked team in the nation to extra points in the first set against Hope. A huge run early gave the Warhawks a 12-3 lead. UWW eventually extended the lead to 19-9 before Hope came flying back. A 7-0 spurt for the Flying Dutch narrowed the gap to 22-21. Both teams had a chance with match points with the Warhawks holding a 26-25 advantage before Hope tallied three in a row to take the first set.
Hope scored six of the last seven points in set two to take a 2-0 lead in the match before sealing the match in set three.
Ally Warburton (St. Charles, Ill./North) led the Warhawk attack with nine kills. Defensively at the net, three Warhawks registered a pair of block assists.
