Warhawk Volleyball Wins Big Five-Setter on the Road

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater added another tally to the win column with a big five-set victory over No. 20 UW-Stevens Point on the road. The No. 6 Warhawks improve to 22-2 overall and maintain their hold of second in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rankings with a 5-1 mark.

The nation's best blocking team registered a 12-5 advantage at the net defensively to lead the way to the win.

UWW came back from a four-point mid-set deficit in the first to take an early lead. A 9-2 run for the Pointers gave the host team a 16-12 advantage. The Warhawks responded with seven of the next eight to take a 19-17 lead before UWSP took over 22-21. From that point, UW-Whitewater tallied the next four with kills from Payton Kuepers (Madison, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran), Ally Warburton (St. Charles, Ill./North) and Abbie Dix (Brodhead, Wis./Brodhead) with a service ace from Rylee Duessler (Sussex, Wis./Sussex Hamilton) capping the set.

The second set was a back-and-forth battle. UWW had a set point at 24-23 before the Pointers put together three consecutive points to win 26-24 and even the match.

A huge 10-0 spurt for UW-Whitewater in set three gave the Warhawks a hefty 19-11 advantage. Jenna Weinfurt (Waukesha, Wis./Catholic Memorial) hammered down four kills in the run and UWW never looked back to reclaim the match lead 2-1.

UW-Stevens Point turned the tide in set four with an 8-0 run to take an 18-14 lead. The Warhawks pushed to within one multiple times, but the Pointers held off the comeback to send the match into a decisive fifth set.

An Aubrie Krzus (Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South) kill sparked a 5-0 burst for the Warhawks in set five as UWW added a pair of blocks in the run to take an 11-4 lead and set the tone for the win.

Three Warhawks tallied double digit kills led by Weinfurt's 17. Kirsten Anderson (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) added 14 and Kuepers posted 10.

Dix and Anderson combined for nine blocks in the middle while Krzus assisted on six blocks in the contest. In the backcourt, Morgan Jensen (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) was stellar with 27 digs. Weinfurt added 14 and Krzus posted 12.

Jensen, Anderson and Duessler put the pressure on from the service line with three aces each while Krzus dished out 43 assists.
