The No. 7 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater volleyball team swept UW-Stout 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-23) Friday night in the 10th Annual Dig Panici Night. The evening was a special one as the Warhawks honored former player Lisa Panici throughout the night.
The nation's best blocking team got it done at the net once again with 10 total blocks (1 solo, 18 assisted) in the match.
Kirsten Anderson (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie), the Division III leader in blocks, paced UWW with five while
Jenna Weinfurt (Waukesha, Wis./Catholic Memorial),
Aubrie Krzus (Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South) and
Abbie Dix (Brodhead, Wis./Brodhead) each tallied four.
The Warhawk defense held the Blue Devils to an attack percentage of just .095 in the contest while UW-Whitewater hit .263.
Offensively, Weinfurt and Anderson registered double digit kills with 14 and 11 respectively. Krzus setup the UWW hitters on 36 kills.
In the backcourt,
Morgan Jensen (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) dug up 19 balls with Weinfurt (14) and
Ally Longden (Pewaukee, Wis./Pewaukee) (12) joining her in double figures.
The annual Dig Panici Night started in 2013, a year after Lisa Panici lost her courageous battle with cancer. A freshman in 2010, she was diagnosed with stage four brain cancer later that year. The Warhawks have since dedicated their locker room in her honor and retired her No. 12 jersey. T-shirts are sold each year and donations welcomed with all proceeds going toward the Lisa Panici Memorial Scholarship here at UW-Whitewater.
